Guysborough Waste Management Facility

Nova Scotia adopted a Solid Waste Resource Management Strategy in 1995 requiring 2nd Generation (double liner) landfills in Nova Scotia by 2006. After comprehensive study, the Municipality determined that its current landfill site was an ideal location for a 2nd Generation facility.

The Municipality undertook negotiations with 17 municipal units on Cape Breton Island and in the Eastern Mainland of the Province. It concluded agreements for a 20-year term (2006-2026) based on a 20-year business plan. The Agreements result in the provision of waste management services to 230,000 people. In addition, the number of landfills in the region served was reduced from seven to one.

The award-winning facility is monitored and maintained to strict environmental standards. A Community Liaison Committee has also been established and meets regularly.

Directions to the Guysborough Waste Management Facility:

The facility is located at 151 Waste Management Road on Route 16 Meagher’s Hill, between the Communities of Boylston and Lincolnville.

From Highway 104 take exit 37 head east towards Guysborough on Route 16 approximately 17 km. The site entrance is located on the left hand side of the road and is signed.

From Guysborough follow Route 16 west approximately 16 km. The site is on the right hand side.
