Spring Bulk Container Program

Spring is here, summer is on the way. It’s still a little chilly outside but the sun is shining and there is just no excuse to stay inside. Especially when there is some outdoor spring cleaning that can be done.
The Public Works Department as well as the Waste Management Facility are once again pleased to offer the Community Bulk Container & Hazardous Houseshold Waste Program beginning May 1st and running through to May 26th.
The program will run from 12 noon each day until 8:00 p.m. excluding Saturday locations where the program will run from 10:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.
To date, 375 tonnes of bulk and hazardous waste has been collected throughout the Municipality!

Important Notice to all Contractors, Homeowners and Landowners:
The Municipality of the District of Guysborough, Public Works Department is asking that you contact us prior to any excavation work carried out within the areas of:
- Hazel Hill
- Tickle
- Shiretown of Guysborough

Little Dover
These four areas contain Municipal water and wastewater infrastructure that could easily be damaged in the event of any excavation.
Once notification is given to Public Works it will be determined if any water or wastewater infrastructure is present in the immediate area of your dig.

Updates from Public Works
Municipal Building Renovations
The Municipal Building at 33 Pleasant Street, Guysborogh is now under renovation. The renovation will include a new entrance to the Judge’s office, new Judge’s office, multipurpose room with direct access to the courtroom area, storage space and mechanical/electrical service space in basement, and addition of 535 square feet on main floor for additional offices, storage room and washroom.
Due to this project taking place, the parking at our location has been limited. On Tuesday's, Access Nova Scotia (Registry of Motor Vehicle) have their office open at this location from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. On this day and any day court is in session parking is very congested. We would like to apologize to the public for any inconvenience this may cause.
Let us take this opportunity to thank you for your patience during these renovations. We hope you agree that the results will be worth the disruption.
Dog Tags
Every owner of a dog shall pay to the Municipality for the dog an annual dog tax, also known as a license fee. The fee is $10.00 altered, $15.00 unaltered from January 1st to March 31, after April 1st fees are $20.00 altered and $30.00 unaltered. You may purchase your dog tag at the front counter at the Municipal Building.

REMINDERS FROM THE BUILDING/FIRE INSPECTOR...
Wood Burning Appliances
This is just a reminder for all residents that use wood burning appliances as their main source of heat. Make sure all venting pipes are cleaned and to replace any sections that may be faulty. Bricks and liners should also be inspected and repaired or replaced if need be.
Smoke Alarms
Batteries in smoke alarms should be replaced at this time and new units installed if so desired. Please make sure when replacing smoke alarms, combination units should be installed which detects carbon monoxide CO2 and smoke.
Civic Signs
Please make sure your “civic” number is visible at this time as all emergency vehicles rely very much on these so as to provide residents with prompt service.

Queensport Lighthouse Repairs
In the past month the Public Works staff have completed repairs and painting to the picturesque, second most photographic lighthouse in Nova Scotia, Queensport Lighthouse.
Parks

The staff has completed landscaping to the Look Off Park, Dort’s Cove and re-landscaped including more flower beds at the Commercial Cable Park, Hazel Hill. This work has enhanced the nature beauty of these parks.

Bulk Container Program-Fall 2011
MODG's Public Works department is pleased to be offering the Bulk Container Program throughout the Municipality for the second time this year. The Fall program will run from October 3, 2011 to October 18, 2011 at 20 different locations across the Municipality. Both Public Works and Waste Management Facility Staff will be working together to deliver the program and hope that it is another successful rotation of bulk waste collection.
